Gabe’s Story:
I’m Gabe, the younger brother of Timothy J. Mariman. Tim’s life defied expectations from the very beginning. Born with severe Cerebral Palsy, he was baptized in the Neonatal ICU, not expected to survive his first night. Yet, Tim spent the next 49 years proving everyone wrong, enriching lives with his perseverance, resilience, and humble wisdom.
Throughout his life, our family was Tim’s primary caregivers. As his needs grew, so did our concern for his future. Eventually, we faced a heartbreaking decision: where would Tim live, and who would care for him? After years on a waiting list, Tim moved into a home provided by Central Oregon Collective.
We were nervous and scared, but also hopeful. Tim had always thrived in a loving environment, but we couldn’t have predicted the impact of independent assisted living. Moving him into his own home and nearby to support him, we saw an instant change. Tim became more independent, made friends, and communicated more effectively.
The staff at Central Oregon Collective became more than caregivers; they were family. Many remained dear friends until Tim’s passing at 49. Living independently allowed Tim to participate in community activities, work in COC’s programs, and make decisions about his life that we had previously made for him.
One poignant moment stands out: visiting Tim during lunch, watching him struggle to eat independently. My instinct was to help, but Tim and his caretaker insisted he could manage. This was a wake-up call. Tim needed the freedom to try and fail, to learn and grow. His caretakers understood this, supporting him through challenges and celebrating his successes.
Tim’s life flourished in ways we never imagined possible. He made friends, worked, enjoyed hobbies like swimming and skiing, and cherished his role as an uncle. The Collective ensured his safety and medical needs were met, going beyond duty to include him in family milestones and trips.
Tim’s journey showed us the power of independence and the transformative impact of compassionate care. His story with Central Oregon Collective is a testament to what’s possible when individuals are supported to live on their terms.
Today, I’m forever grateful to Central Oregon Collective for enriching Tim’s life and teaching us all the true meaning of independence and support.
