At Central Oregon Collective (COC), Autumn brings a shift in scenery and a fresh array of community adventures. Our clients love layering up and exploring—from picking pumpkins under the gaze of Smith Rock to crunching through fallen leaves, sipping apple cider, and connecting with friends. This season is about more than cooler temperatures—it’s about gathering, discovery, and belonging for people of all ability levels.
Here are some accessible and inclusive activities COC loves doing together each fall:
1. Pumpkin Patch Fun at Smith Rock Ranch
Just a short drive from Bend, Smith Rock Ranch offers wide-open pumpkin fields that are easy to navigate, with stunning views of Smith Rock State Park. Clients can pick pumpkins, enjoy hayrides, navigate the corn maze (Maize), interact with friendly farm animals, and even watch or operate a pumpkin cannon—an unforgettable sensory experience.
Accessibility notes:
Wheelchair-friendly paths are available in the market and main patch.
Staff-supported group outings and transportation help make participation smooth and fun for everyone.
2. Corn Maze Exploration
The annual themed “Maize” corn maze at Smith Rock Ranch shifts yearly and is designed for people of all mobility levels. Asset aids (e.g. walkers) can be used along wide, even paths. It's a fun way to build community, problem-solve together, and embrace the season.
3. Scenic Picnic & Leaf-Collecting Walks
Bend’s many parks—like Drake or Pilot Butte—provide gentle trails and spacious picnic areas. A crisp autumn morning spent collecting colorful leaves, birdwatching, an
d sharing snacks can be a powerful way to unwind and connect.
4. Apple Orchards & Local Markets
Visiting nearby orchards or Redmond Farmers Market offers a multisensory experience—crisp fruit tasting, vibrant fall displays, and community interactions. Many markets provide accessible stalls and flat pathways. Plus, clients enjoy choosing produce and practicing independence with staff support.
5. Nature Walks on the Deschutes River Trail
Central Oregon’s trail system remains beautiful in the fall—especially along the Deschutes River. With mostly paved and wide gravel sections, these walks are inclusive for mobility devices, and the shimmering reflections and colorful foliage offer inspiring moments of calm and connection.
6. Art & Seasonal Crafts Workshops
Back at the Collective or at local partner studios, we host pumpkin painting, leaf-pressing, and crafting sessions. These are sensory-friendly and adaptable for all fine-motor levels—providing creative expression in a safe, guided setting.
Transportation & Planning: Accessible vans, scheduled group pickups, and pre-trip orientation help everyone feel prepared and supported.
Staff-Led Support: Our team provides assistance with mobility, sensory needs, and participation—tailoring experiences so all clients can fully engage.
Flexible Options: Quiet spaces during festivals or alternate pacing are offered for those needing sensory breaks or a slower pace.
For our clients, fall is more than a season—it’s a canvas for growth, choice, and togetherness. Accessing autumn’s rhythms—cool breezes, bright foliage, fresh harvests—creates moments that speak to independence and community connection. It’s a reminder: nature’s gifts—and the strength of community—are accessible to all.
