The Importance of Building Inclusive Communities in Central Oregon
When we talk about building strong, thriving communities, one word keeps rising to the surface: belonging.
True inclusion means more than access — it means that every individual, regardless of ability or background, is welcomed, respected, and empowered to live a full and connected life. Here in Central Oregon, inclusion looks like neighbors showing up for each other, local businesses making space for people of all abilities, and community events designed with everyone in mind.
As a nonprofit based in Bend, Central Oregon Collective supports individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) and others who experience barriers to full community participation. For us, inclusion isn’t just a goal — it’s essential to building a community where everyone can thrive.
Inclusion in Action: What It Looks Like Day to Day
Inclusion isn’t a buzzword — it’s visible in the tangible work happening across our community:
Equal Access to Essential Services
Making sure individuals with disabilities have access to housing, healthcare, and community resources.
Community Inclusion Program (CIP)
Connecting individuals to activities, events, and meaningful participation in community life.
Supported Living & In-Home Services
Empowering people to live independently, with dignity and respect.
Group Homes, Affordable Housing & Transportation Support
From getting to medical appointments to simply being able to attend local events — because no one should be left out due to logistics.
The Holiday Season: A Time to Reflect on Belonging
The holiday season is often filled with gatherings, celebrations, and community traditions — but it can also highlight feelings of isolation for those who face participation barriers. Events that are loud, crowded, or not sensory-aware can unintentionally exclude people.
This season, we invite our Central Oregon neighbors to:
Plan gatherings with accessibility in mind — Consider seating, lighting, sensory needs, and communication styles.
Use inclusive language in event invites and community messaging — A small wording shift can change who feels welcome.
Make space for different ways of engaging — Participation doesn’t look the same for everyone.
Celebrate presence in all its forms — Whether someone joins in conversation, participates quietly, or simply shows up — that presence matters.
How You Can Be Part of the Change
Building inclusive communities is a shared effort. Here are meaningful ways to get involved:
Volunteer — A single ride, a friendly face at an event, or a few hours of time can make all the difference.
Donate — Funding supports affordable housing, in-home support services, group homes, and community programs.
Spread Awareness — Share stories of inclusion, tag local partners, and celebrate community moments where belonging shines.
Show Up for Local Events — Simply attending community gatherings strengthens our shared sense of connection.
Belonging Is Built Together
Inclusion isn’t seasonal — but the holidays remind us how deeply people long to feel part of something.
As we move through November and into the heart of the holiday season, may we continue working toward a Central Oregon where everyone — regardless of ability — feels seen, valued, and welcomed.
At Central Oregon Collective, we believe inclusive communities are built through intention, compassion, and everyday acts of connection. Whether you're a neighbor, business owner, organization, or simply someone who cares—you play a role in creating belonging.
Let’s do more than extend invitations this season. Let’s extend true welcome.
